Learn more about oil and gas well completions gases and services.
Well completion is the process of making a drilled well ready for production. This involves a series of steps including well casing, cementing, perforating, and installing production equipment. It ensures the well can safely and efficiently produce oil or gas.
Industrial gases such as nitrogen (N₂), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and sometimes natural gas are used for various purposes during well completions, including well stimulation, lifting fluids, pressure testing, and fracturing.
Nitrogen is used for its inert properties, which prevent combustion and corrosion. It is used to displace fluids, stimulate wells, lift liquids, and pressurize systems. Its inert nature makes it safe and effective for these applications.
Benefits include preventing oxidation and corrosion, reducing environmental impact, enhancing well stimulation, improving safety by displacing oxygen, and effectively lifting and displacing fluids within the well.
Nitrogen is injected into the well to increase pressure and stimulate the flow of hydrocarbons. This can help to clean up the wellbore, remove debris, and enhance the productivity of the well by improving the permeability of the formation.
Carbon dioxide is used in well stimulation and enhanced oil recovery. It can be injected to lower the viscosity of hydrocarbons, making them easier to produce. CO₂ is also used in foam fracturing fluids to improve the effectiveness of hydraulic fracturing.
CO₂ enhances oil recovery by dissolving in the oil, reducing its viscosity, and increasing its volume. This improves the flow of oil to the production well, making it easier to extract. CO₂ injection can also help maintain reservoir pressure.
Effectiveness is monitored through real-time data acquisition systems that track pressure, flow rates, and gas composition. Downhole sensors and surface monitoring equipment provide data to optimize the completion process.
