Popular gases for power

Learn more about the different gases commonly used in the power industry.

CH₄

Methane

Used as a primary fuel in natural gas-fired power plants. It is burned to produce electricity through gas turbines and combined-cycle plants.

O₂

Oxygen

Utilized in oxy-fuel combustion processes to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. Oxygen is also used in gasification processes for converting coal and biomass into syngas.

H₂

Hydrogen

Emerging as a clean fuel for power generation, hydrogen can be used in fuel cells or burned in gas turbines. Hydrogen is also produced in power-to-gas systems for energy storage and grid balancing.

N₂

Nitrogen

Employed for purging and blanketing to prevent oxidation and explosions in fuel storage tanks and pipelines. Nitrogen is also used in cooling systems and for inerting electrical equipment.

CO₂

Carbon Dioxide

Utilized in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes and in some cooling applications. CO2 capture and storage (CCS) technologies are being developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.

SF₆

Sulfur Hexafluoride

Used as an insulating gas in high-voltage circuit breakers, switchgear, and other electrical equipment due to its excellent dielectric properties and arc-quenching capabilities.

Ar

Argon

Used as a shielding gas in welding processes for the maintenance and construction of power plant components, ensuring high-quality welds.

He

Helium

Employed in leak detection for pipelines, heat exchangers, and other critical components. Helium is also used as a coolant in certain types of nuclear reactors and in superconducting magnets for power generation and research.

NH₃

Ammonia

Used in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems for reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from power plants. Ammonia can also be used as a hydrogen carrier in some energy storage and transport applications.

Power industry FAQs

Learn more about the power industry gases and services we offer.

What are the most popular gases used in the power industry?

The power industry uses hydrogen as a cooling medium in generators, and natural gas as a fuel for power generation.

Can I track my gas levels?

Yes. We offer real-time monitoring for most of our gas applications to make sure you never run out. Our solution provides you (and us) with accurate updates on your levels so we can optimize your gas delivery, detect leaks and other issues – saving you money while supporting our sustainability commitments.

Do you offer same-day delivery for gases used in the power generation industry?

Yes. We make true same-day deliveries with no qualifications. If you call at 4:55 pm and you need a same-day delivery, we will deliver that day.

Is it possible to order my power industry gases in bulk?

We offer cost-effective bulk gas solutions including bulk hydrogen and natural gas for the power generation industry. Your products will be safely delivered by our modern fleet of fuel-efficient trucks, equipped for cylinder and bulk gas delivery.

Can I track my gas cylinders balance?

Yes. WestAir barcodes each cylinder and will scan each cylinder when it enters and leaves your location. This eliminates the need for you to perform time-consuming and error-prone inventory tracking. This process also guarantees accurate monthly billing statements.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency service if I run out of hydrogen or natural gas?

Yes. Our dedicated account management and 24/7 emergency service is there to make a bad day better.
