The primary gases used for turbine generator cooling are hydrogen (H₂) and air. Hydrogen is preferred for its superior thermal conductivity and cooling efficiency.
Hydrogen is used because of its excellent thermal conductivity and low density. It efficiently removes heat from the generator windings and other components, ensuring optimal performance and reducing energy losses.
Carbon dioxide is used both in its solid form (dry ice) and liquid form for cooling. It is effective for spot cooling, temperature control in food processing, and creating an inert environment that also cools.
Hydrogen cooling involves circulating hydrogen gas within the generator casing. The hydrogen absorbs heat from the generator components and then passes through heat exchangers, where it releases the heat before being recirculated.
The purity of hydrogen is maintained through continuous monitoring and purging systems that remove impurities and moisture. High-purity hydrogen ensures effective cooling and prevents potential damage to generator components.
