Popular gases for food processing

Learn more about the different gases commonly used in the food processing industry.

CO₂

Carbon Dioxide

Used for carbonation in beverages, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to extend shelf life, refrigeration, and freezing processes (dry ice), and in controlled atmosphere storage to inhibit bacterial growth and preserve freshness.

N₂

Nitrogen

Employed in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to displace oxygen, preventing oxidation and spoilage. Nitrogen is also used in cryogenic freezing and chilling, and for purging and blanketing during storage and transport.

O₂

Oxygen

Used in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) for certain products to maintain color and freshness, such as in red meats. Controlled oxygen levels can also be used in storage to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables.

NH₃

Ammonia

Widely used as a refrigerant in large industrial refrigeration systems due to its high efficiency and low cost. It is common in cold storage facilities and food processing plants.

CO

Carbon Monoxide

Occasionally used in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) for meat products to maintain a bright red color, though its use is highly regulated due to safety concerns.

N₂O

Nitrous Oxide

Used as a propellant in the food industry, particularly in whipped cream dispensers and some aerosol food products.

Ar

Argon

Sometimes used in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to replace oxygen, particularly for high-value products or in specific applications where its inert properties are beneficial.

H₂

Hydrogen

Employed in hydrogenation processes to convert unsaturated fats to saturated fats in the production of margarine and shortening.

Food processing FAQs

Learn more about the food processing gases and services we offer.

What are the most popular gases used in food processing?

Food processing involves the use of nitrogen for freezing and packaging to extend shelf life, and carbon dioxide (CO2) for carbonation and chilling processes.

Can I track my gas levels?

Yes. We offer real-time monitoring for most of our gas applications to make sure you never run out. Our solution provides you (and us) with accurate updates on your levels so we can optimize your gas delivery, detect leaks and other issues – saving you money while supporting our sustainability commitments.

Do you offer same-day delivery for gases used in the food processing industry?

Yes. We make true same-day deliveries with no qualifications. If you call at 4:55 pm and you need a same-day delivery, we will deliver that day.

Is it possible to order my food processing gases in bulk?

We offer cost-effective bulk gas solutions including bulk nitrogen and CO2 for food processing companies. Your products will be safely delivered by our modern fleet of fuel-efficient trucks, equipped for cylinder and bulk gas delivery.

Can I track my gas cylinders balance?

Yes. WestAir barcodes each cylinder and will scan each cylinder when it enters and leaves your location. This eliminates the need for you to perform time-consuming and error-prone inventory tracking. This process also guarantees accurate monthly billing statements.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency service if I run out of nitrogen or carbon dioxide (CO2) for my food processing operations?

Yes. Our dedicated account management and 24/7 emergency service is there to make a bad day better.
