Butane is a highly flammable hydrocarbon gas with the chemical formula C4H10 that exists in two different structural forms, known as n-butane and isobutane. At room temperature, it’s a colorless and odorless gas, though manufacturers often add a distinctive smell (similar to rotten eggs) as a safety measure to help detect leaks.
The molecule consists of four carbon atoms bonded together in a chain, with hydrogen atoms attached – think of it like a tiny molecular chain where each carbon serves as a link connecting to its neighbors. This relatively simple structure gives butane some very practical properties: it liquefies easily under moderate pressure, which is why it’s commonly used in disposable lighters and portable camping stoves, where the liquid butane vaporizes into a gas as it’s released.
Its high energy density and clean-burning characteristics also make it an excellent fuel source for various applications, from heating and cooking to serving as a propellant in aerosol sprays.
