Used to create a protective blanket over wine to prevent oxidation, in carbonated wine production (such as sparkling wines), and for cleaning and purging tanks and barrels.
Employed to displace oxygen in tanks and bottles, preventing oxidation and spoilage. It’s also used for sparging (removing dissolved oxygen) and in bottling to inert the headspace.
Preferred for purging tanks and barrels and creating an inert atmosphere during storage and bottling due to its heavier-than-air properties and minimal solubility in wine, which makes it more effective at displacing oxygen.
Controlled amounts are sometimes introduced during micro-oxygenation to improve tannin structure and mouthfeel in red wines. However, oxygen exposure is generally minimized to prevent oxidation.
