About

This compound is a colorless gas at room temperature that exhibits extremely high reactivity due to its unique molecular structure. At its core, it has a boron atom surrounded by three chlorine atoms in a flat, triangular arrangement. What makes it particularly reactive is that the boron atom is electron-deficient, meaning it’s constantly seeking electrons from other molecules – this makes it a strong Lewis acid. When it encounters moisture in the air, it reacts violently to form acids, which necessitates careful handling in moisture-free conditions. Despite these hazardous properties, boron trichloride plays vital roles in semiconductor manufacturing and organic chemistry, particularly in processes like plasma etching and as a catalyst for specific chemical reactions.
