Popular gases for analytical laboratories

Learn more about the different gases commonly used in the analytical laboratory industry.

He

Helium

Widely used as a carrier gas in gas chromatography (GC) due to its inertness and optimal flow characteristics. It is also used in mass spectrometry (MS) and as a coolant in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and other cryogenic applications.

N₂

Nitrogen

Employed as a carrier gas in gas chromatography (GC) and as a purge gas in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Nitrogen is also used for creating inert atmospheres in sample preparation and storage, and in evaporative light scattering detectors (ELSD).

H₂

Hydrogen

Used as a fuel gas in flame ionization detectors (FID) and as a carrier gas in gas chromatography (GC), particularly for high-speed and high-resolution analyses. Hydrogen is also used in catalytic reduction reactions in analytical procedures.

O₂

Oxygen

Utilized in combustion analysis and elemental analysis, as well as in oxidative reactions during sample preparation. Oxygen is also used in atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) with flame atomization.

Ar

Argon

Used as a plasma gas in inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopy for elemental analysis and as a carrier gas in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Argon is also employed in inert gas fusion techniques for analyzing metals and alloys.

CO₂

Carbon Dioxide

Used in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) for the separation and analysis of compounds. CO2 is also employed in some infrared (IR) spectroscopy applications.

CH₄

Methane

Utilized as a fuel gas in flame ionization detectors (FID) and other flame-based detection systems in gas chromatography (GC).

C₂H₂

Acetylene

Used as a fuel gas in atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) with flame atomization, providing the necessary high-temperature flame for atomizing samples.

CO

Carbon Monoxide

Employed in specific analytical techniques and in the calibration of certain types of detectors and analyzers.

SF₆

Sulfur Hexafluoride

Used as an insulating gas in high-voltage equipment and occasionally as a tracer gas in leak detection applications within analytical laboratories.

Analytical laboratory FAQs

Learn more about the analytical laboratory gases and services we offer.

What are the most popular gases used in analytical laboratories?

Analytical laboratories use helium for gas chromatography and nitrogen for creating inert atmospheres during analyses.

Can I track my gas levels?

Yes. We offer real-time monitoring for most of our gas applications to make sure you never run out. Our solution provides you (and us) with accurate updates on your levels so we can optimize your gas delivery, detect leaks and other issues – saving you money while supporting our sustainability commitments.

Do you offer same-day delivery for gases used by analytical laboratories?

Yes. We make true same-day deliveries with no qualifications. If you call at 4:55 pm and you need a same-day delivery, we will deliver that day.

Is it possible to order gases for my analytical laboratory in bulk?

We offer cost-effective bulk gas solutions including bulk helium for gas chromatography and bulk nitrogen for analyses. Your products will be safely delivered by our modern fleet of fuel-efficient trucks, equipped for cylinder and bulk gas delivery.

Can I track my gas cylinders balance?

Yes. WestAir barcodes each cylinder and will scan each cylinder when it enters and leaves your location. This eliminates the need for you to perform time-consuming and error-prone inventory tracking. This process also guarantees accurate monthly billing statements.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency service if I run out of helium or nitrogen for my analytical laboratory needs?

Yes. Our dedicated account management and 24/7 emergency service is there to make a bad day better.
