A dewar is essentially a vacuum-insulated storage vessel. It operates at low pressure (near atmospheric) and is designed to hold and dispense LN2 in liquid form. You typically pour or ladle from open-neck dewars, or use a low-pressure withdrawal tube on self-pressurizing models. Dewars are what you’d use for dipping samples, filling cold traps, topping off cryogenic storage units, or bench-level lab work. They range from small 2–5L benchtop flasks up to large 200L+ units on casters.
A cylinder (sometimes called a “liquid cylinder” or “microbulk cylinder”) is a high-pressure vessel designed primarily to deliver nitrogen as a gas, though it stores it as a liquid inside. Models like the Airgas Dura-Cyl or Praxair NexGen build internal pressure (often 22–350 psi) as the liquid warms and vaporizes. You connect them to equipment, gas lines, or regulators via CGA fittings. They’re what you’d use to supply a gas manifold, purge a glove box, or feed an instrument that needs a steady flow of cold gas or high-pressure nitrogen.
