About

Isobutylene, also known as isobutene or 2-methylpropene, is a colorless flammable gas with a sweet petroleum-like odor. From a molecular perspective, it belongs to the alkene family and has the chemical formula C4H8, featuring a double bond and a branched structure where one carbon atom bonds to three other carbons.

This branching gives isobutylene unique properties that make it particularly valuable in the petrochemical industry, where it serves as a building block for producing important materials like synthetic rubber, plastic additives, and fuel additives. At room temperature, isobutylene exists as a gas, but it can be liquefied under pressure, making it easier to transport and use in industrial processes. Its high reactivity, particularly at the double bond site, makes it an excellent starting material for many chemical synthesis reactions.
