LC-MS/MS is a technique that combines liquid chromatography separation with tandem mass spectrometry detection to identify and quantify compounds in complex samples.

Nitrogen is the main nebulizing gas in electrospray ionization sources that helps convert liquid samples into gas-phase ions for mass spectrometric analysis. It also functions as a drying gas to remove solvent molecules and as a curtain gas to prevent contamination of the ion source.
Helium is used as a collision gas in triple quadrupole mass spectrometers, where it facilitates controlled fragmentation of precursor ions to generate characteristic product ions.
Hydrogen serves as a collision gas alternative to helium and as a carrier gas in some LC-MS/MS configurations. It also works as a fuel gas for flame ionization detectors when LC-MS/MS systems are coupled with additional detection methods.
LC-MS/MS applications typically require ultra high purity gases (99.999% or higher) with extremely low moisture and hydrocarbon content. Specialized gas purification systems may be needed to achieve the stringent purity requirements.
