Popular gases for defense

Learn more about the different gases commonly used in the defense industry.

O₂

Oxygen

Used in oxy-fuel cutting and welding processes for manufacturing and repairing military equipment. Oxygen is also crucial in life support systems for submarines, aircraft, and spacecraft.

N₂

Nitrogen

Utilized for purging and pressurizing fuel tanks and systems to prevent explosions and fires. Nitrogen is also used for inerting environments, in tire inflation for military vehicles, and in cryogenic cooling systems.

Ar

Argon

Employed as a shielding gas in welding applications, particularly TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding, to protect welds from atmospheric contamination. Argon is also used in some advanced weapon systems and for inerting purposes.

He

Helium

Used in leak detection for fuel tanks and pressurized systems, cooling infrared detectors and other sensors, and as a lifting gas in surveillance balloons and airships. Helium is also utilized in some cryogenic cooling applications.

H₂

Hydrogen

Used in fuel cells for portable power systems and as a potential fuel for certain types of military vehicles and submarines. Hydrogen is also employed in some high-temperature welding and cutting processes.

CO₂

Carbon Dioxide

Used in fire suppression systems for protecting sensitive equipment and facilities. CO2 is also employed in some training munitions and for creating smoke screens.

C₂H₂

Acetylene

Used in oxy-acetylene welding and cutting torches for manufacturing, maintenance, and repair of military hardware.

CH₄

Methane

Utilized as a fuel for certain types of military vehicles and in energy generation systems on military bases.

SF₆

Sulfur Hexafluoride

Used as an insulating gas in high-voltage electrical equipment and in radar systems to prevent electrical discharge and arcing.

C₃H₈

Propane

Used as a fuel for heating, cooking, and in some cutting and welding applications.

NH₃

Ammonia

Employed in refrigeration systems, particularly in large-scale cooling applications for military installations.
