H₂
The most widely used generator cooling gas in large power plants. Hydrogen’s exceptional thermal conductivity and low density make it far more efficient than air for cooling large turbine generators, reducing windage losses and improving overall generator efficiency.
N₂
Purging and inerting generator casings, cooling systems, and associated equipment during maintenance and shutdown operations. Also used as a backup purging gas when transitioning generators between operating states.
CO₂
Used as a safe intermediate purging gas when transitioning generators between air and hydrogen atmospheres during startup and shutdown, preventing the formation of explosive hydrogen-air mixtures.
SF₆
The dominant insulating and arc-quenching gas in high-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, gas-insulated substations (GIS), and gas-insulated transmission lines (GIL).
